Civic Support for the Writing Chalet Project from The Mayor of Rochester

The Mayor and the City of Rochester Society back the revival of this historic gem

We were delighted to attend the recent AGM of the City of Rochester Society — one of the city’s most established heritage voices and a valued supporter of the Charles Dickens’ Writing Chalet project.

The evening was made particularly special by the presence of the Mayor of Medway, who not only offered his support in person but also took to social media afterwards to share a public endorsement of the project.

“I attended the City of Rochester Society’s AGM tonight where, as part of the meeting, there was a presentation on the restoration of Charles Dickens’ Chalet. A real hidden gem in the heart of Rochester and one I’m proud to support. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring new life to a cultural asset — and to make it available for the public to enjoy.” – Mayor of Medway, 25th June 2025

These last words — “to make it available for the public to enjoy” — go right to the heart of what this project is about.

Why this support matters

Rochester’s rich heritage depends on civic and community partnership. The City of Rochester Society continues to play a key role in preserving the city’s story — and the Mayor’s words show that there is real local appetite to see the Chalet revived not as a relic, but as a living cultural space.

As the project moves forward, this kind of backing helps us build momentum — and strengthens our case for wider support, funding, and community engagement.
